
SMSC Programming
Our unique approach to individual and group learning provides skaters with an opportunity to access high quality instruction with continuous support from a community of peers, coaches, and SMSC family.
Figure Skating Programs
Athletic and Artistic Inspired Movement

AAIM classes include an hour of comprehensive instruction of edge work and jumps, along with a review of additional skating components such as spins and artistry. This five week class, serves to provide skaters Basic 4-Preliminary with a bridge into higher level skating, and skaters Pre-Bronze and higher with a group instruction that complements individual coaching. Skaters Basic 4 and above are welcome.
Power and Edge

Power and Edge classes are designed to support skaters of all interests, hockey and figure skaters alike, and serve to increase a skater’s efficiency on the ice. This 50 minute class consists of exercises that focus on deep edges, increasing power, and improving one’s ability to maneuver on their blade. Skaters Basic 5 and above, age 9+, are welcome.
Theatre

Expanding a skaters performance abilities, SMSC's theatre class works with skaters on the art of discovering, creating, and emoting. Skaters can expect exercises in improvisation, interpretation, blocking, and expression. SMSC spring Theatre participants will also work on a number to be performed at SMSC's July 19th Battle of the Blades.
Open Freeskate

Open Freeskate can be used by all skaters Basic 6 and above to practice jumps, spins, patterns, and programs. Skaters who have not yet passed basic 6 are welcome to use this time as well under the guidance of an individual coach. Program music can be played during this time.
Off Ice AAIM

Off Ice AAIM teaches tools that will enhance a skater's performance on the ice. Skaters will work on targeted drills that build strength, agility, and endurance. This will include practices inspired by pilates and yoga, improving flexibility and core stability. Additionally, skaters will practice mindfulness to help maintain focus, reduce stress, and cultivate a winning mindset to improve their performance during competitions and live audience performances.
Jumps Class

Recognizing the many details that make up a finessed and quality jump, we have set aside time to allow skaters to practice their jump elements in a group setting, complete with high quality instruction and peer support. SMSC jumps classes are divided by level and focus on advancing a skater wholistically as they move towards higher level jumps and spins.

Learn to Skate

Learn to Skate USA® programs make skating fun and safe for all as they grow life long love for skating. Through our updated curriculum and our certified, passionate instructors, we build solid skill progression to grow confidence in skaters of all ages while providing them the resources necessary to reach their skating goals. Southern Minnesota Skating Club offers programming for all ages and levels. Regular skill evaluations will be conducted to ensure skaters are learning and progressing at a rate that is just right for them. The first half of all classes consists of focused instruction, and is followed by skill based games and play. Classes are offered in small groups and held in 50-60 minute sessions.
Learn to Skate Explorers

Learn to Skate USA® Snow Explorers program introduces our youngest skaters to the ice in a way that makes skating fun and safe for all as they grow an everlasting love for the ice. Through our updated curriculum and our certified, passionate instructors, we introduce skaters ages 2-3 years old to the world of skating first through off ice exploration and continue to build confidence at the rink, in skates, and on the ice. Regular skill evaluations will be conducted to ensure skaters are learning and progressing at a rate that is just right for them. Classes are offered in small groups and held in 25-30 minute sessions. Parents are encouraged to participate off ice at the beginning of each class.
Adult Learn to Skate

Our Adult Learn to Skate USA® program makes skating fun and safe for all skaters as they pursue a love for skating. Through our high quality curriculum and our certified, passionate instructors, we build upon solid skill progression to grow confidence in skaters of all ages while providing them the resources necessary to reach their skating goals. Southern Minnesota Skating Club offers adult programming for all ages and levels. Regular skill evaluations will be conducted to ensure skaters are learning and progressing at a rate that is just right for them. Classes are offered in small groups and held in 50-60 minute sessions.
Learn to Compete

Learn to Compete program provides Learn to Skate and Aspire skaters an opportunity to learn more about the competition experience. This 6 week program will introduce skaters to the development of a competition routine, the preparation for competition, and the competition experience with a mock event.
Open Freeskate
